Salvador was founded as São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos is historically known as São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos.
It is the capital of the state of Bahia and the first capital of Colonial Brazil.
With 3 million inhabitants, it is the most populous city in Northeast Brazil, the third most populous in the country. Counting its metropolitan area, there are more than 4 million inhabitants.
The city of Salvador was formerly called Bahía, even by the inhabitants of the state itself.
It was also called the Capital of Joy (due to the huge popular festivities) and Black Rome, for being considered the city with the highest percentage of blacks located outside of Africa.
