Maraú is a coastal municipality located in the state of Bahia, Brazil, with a rich history dating back to the time of the Portuguese colonization.
The region was initially inhabited by the Tupinambá indigenous tribe, and later by Portuguese settlers who came in search of natural resources such as timber and sugar cane and cocoa crops.
During the 18th century, the region experienced a great economic boom thanks to the cocoa trade, becoming one of the largest producers in the world.
However, with the end of the cocoa boom period and the creation of the Ilhéus-Itacaré highway, the region's economy slowed down.
In recent decades, Maraú has experienced an economic renaissance thanks to tourism and the conservation of its beautiful beaches, rivers, and mangroves.
