João Pessoa was born on the banks of the Sanhauá River.
It was founded on August 5, 1585 with the name of Povoação de Nossa Senhora das Neves, in homage to the Saint of the day it was founded.
Over time, it received different names, such as: Filipéia de Nossa Senhora das Neves or Felipéia, in 1588, honoring King Philip II of Spain. During the Dutch occupation, between the years 1634 and 1654, they gave it the name of Frederikstadt (Federica), in homage to Prince Orange, Federico Enrique.
With the Portuguese reconquest, it was renamed Nossa Senhora das Neves again, and in 1817 Parahyba.
Finally, it is called João Pessoa, it is in homage to the Paraiba politician João Pessoa, assassinated in 1930 in the city of Recife, when he was governor of the State.
The fact brought great popular repercussion, being practically the starting factor of the Revolution of 30.
