The Jericoacoara lands were the first to be colonized by the Portuguese. In the year 1614, a military expedition conquered the entire area inhabited by indigenous tribes, who were dedicated to hunting and fishing.
In its beginnings, Jijoca de Jericoacoara was founded as a small village whose main economic activities were agriculture and fishing.
For several centuries, a large part of these lands were not exploited or occupied, this was what helped maintain the virgin state until now.
In the year 1923, the town of Jericoacoara and the lands that today form the old municipality of Acaraú were built.
In 1984, the Jericoacoara Environmental Protection Area was created to conserve and protect its wonderful natural environment. The small fishing village that did not exceed 2,000 inhabitants, and began to grow attracting tourists.
In 1990 his emancipation began and on March 6, 1991, the current city of Jijoca de Jericoacoara was founded.
