Ilheus is a city located on the southern coast of the state of Bahia, in Brazil.
It is known as the "cocoa capital" due to its cocoa production, and is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful beaches, colonial architecture, and the literary influence of Brazilian writer Jorge Amado.
The main attractions of the city include the Paranaguá Palace, the São Sebastião Cathedral, the Municipal Theater, the Vesúvio Bar, the Bataclan and the Jorge Amado House of Culture.
The most popular beaches include Praia dos Milionários, Praia do Cururupe, Praia do Sul and Praia da Avenida.
To get to Ilheus, you can take a flight to Ilheus International Airport (IOS), which has regular flights from major Brazilian cities. It is also possible to arrive by bus from Salvador, the capital of the state of Bahia, or by car through the BR-101.
The city is located about 400 kilometers south of Salvador, and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Serra do Mar on the west.
