Ilhéus is a historic city located on the southern coast of the state of Bahia, Brazil.
It was founded in the year 1534 and became an important commercial center in colonial times due to the production of cocoa, which was exported to Europe.
The city developed rapidly in the 20th century, especially after the construction of a highway connecting it to the rest of the state.
Literature has also played an important role in the city's history, especially through the work of Brazilian writer Jorge Amado, who was born in Ilhéus and set many of his novels in and around the city.
As a result, Ilhéus has become a major cultural tourist destination in Brazil, with numerous sites related to Amado's life and work, as well as several museums and art galleries.
