The first inhabitants of the region were the Tupi Indians Florianópolis-guranis, practiced agriculture, fishing and gathering shellfish.
Archaeological sites were found whose earliest records date back to 4,800 BC
About the year 1675, the family of Francisco Dias Velho was established on the island, founding Nossa Senhora do Desterro, currently Florianopolis. From this date were getting people from various parts of the coast who settled on the island.
The island of Santa Catarina has a strategic location, in 1737, it occupied militarily and rise several forts to control and defend the territory.
This military occupation grew agricultural activity and manufacturing of cotton and linen.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the city had a large population growth.
