Since 1860, Canela was the obligatory step for the transport of cattle to Porto Alegre and neighboring towns.
At that time, it was a forest of araucarias, wood that German and Italian emigrants began to exploit, later leading to the installation of large lumber industries.
For many decades, the transport of wood was done by traction animals, until in 1924 the railway arrived at the place.
The municipality of Canela was created on December 28, 1944.
Thanks to its pleasant climate and scenic beauty, the tourist exploitation of the municipality grew.
The Caracol Waterfall, the second most visited tourist site in the South of Brazil.
