The history of Bombinhas begins long before the time of colonization.
In the area you can find archaeological sites, inscriptions and other signs of the existence of indigenous tribes, especially Tupi, on the peninsula. The location of the mounds are near the sea, indicating that the Indians lived by fishing and growing yucca.
In the year 1527, Sebastián Cabot, in the service of the King of Spain, arrived at Zimbros Bay, giving it the name of San Sebastián. Between 1748 and 1756, around 6,000 people arrived from the Azores, a Portuguese territory. Some families settled near the Bay of Meros, today Porto Belo, indicating the name of Nova Lisboa.
After the year 1960, the community was benefited by the new roads and the improvement in public transport and the supply of electricity and water.
In the 1970s, the population grew in number, also attracted by the growth of tourism throughout the area.
