Barreirinhas is a municipality located in the Brazilian state of Maranhão, known as the "gateway" to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country.
The landscape of the Lençóis Maranhenses is made up of white sand dunes that resemble sheets and a series of crystalline lagoons that form during the rainy season.
In addition to the Lençóis Maranhenses, Barreirinhas also offers a number of other tourist attractions, such as the Preguiças and Formiga rivers, the Mandacaru Lighthouse and the Atins fishing community.
To get to Barreirinhas, the most common option is to take a flight to the airport of São Luís, the capital of Maranhão, and then drive about four hours to Barreirinhas. Another option is to take a flight to the Teresina airport, the capital of Piauí, and drive about six hours to Barreirinhas.
Barreirinhas is located on the north coast of the state of Maranhão, in the northeast region of Brazil. It limits to the north with the municipality of Santo Amaro do Maranhão, to the south with the municipality of Humberto de Campos, to the east with the Atlantic Ocean and to the west with the municipality of Paulino Neves.
