Camboriu is located in the state of Santa Catarina, with 63,000 inhabitants in a total area of 214 km ².
The town was founded by Portuguese settlers originating from the Azores, and was separated from Itajaí on 5 April 1884. In 1964 Camboriu littoral portion was emancipated, and became the city of Balneario Camboriu.
Most of the city lies between the coast and the Pan American Highway, which houses most of the shops, buildings and all the tourist activity.
