Aracaju is the capital of the state of Sergipe in Brazil and its history begins in the 19th century.
In the year 1855, Colonel Inácio Barbosa began to build a city at the mouth of the Sergipe River to replace the city of São Cristóvão as the state capital.
The city grew rapidly and in 1885 the Central Railway Station of Sergipe was built, which helped the economic expansion of the region.
During the following years, the city experienced a great cultural and artistic influence, with the arrival of important writers, poets and musicians.
In the year 1920, the Port of Aracaju was built, which further helped its economic development.
In the year 1949, Aracaju became the capital of the new state of Sergipe and since then it has been an important city in the northeast of Brazil.
