Vitória is the capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo and is located on an island off the east coast of Brazil.
The city was founded in 1551 by the Portuguese and has been an important trading port ever since. During colonial times, the city was attacked several times by pirates and corsairs, including Francis Drake in 1586 and Thomas Cavendish in 1592.
In the 19th century, Vitória became a center for the production of coffee and later for rubber and other raw materials.
The city was also the scene of important battles during the Canudos War and the 1930 Revolution.
Today, Vitória is known for its colonial architecture, its beaches, and its cultural life.
