Tiradentes is a city with a rich history.
Founded in the 18th century, the city became a major gold and diamond mining center. During colonial times, Tiradentes was known as "Villa de São José do Rio das Mortes", and was one of the main points of trade between Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
In the year 1789, Tiradentes became the scene of the so-called "Inconfidencia Mineira", a separatist movement that sought the independence of Brazil from Portuguese control.
The rebellion was put down by the Portuguese authorities, and Tiradentes, one of the leaders of the movement, was executed in the main square of the city. Today, the city is named after him in his honor.
