Rio de Janeiro is on the western margin of the Guanabara Bay, which encompasses the land between Copacabana and Itaipú, and some of its islands, such as Gobernador and Paquetá.
It is on flat land, surrounded by mountains and hills. The city occupies 1182.3 km².
The Sierra del Mar is located in the northwest of Rio, on the Atlantic edge of the plain, about 40 km from the coast.
The main hills are: Tijuca National Park (1,022 meters), Bico do Papagaio (975 meters), Andaraí (900 meters), Pedra de la Gávea (842 meters), Corcovado (704 meters), Dois Irmãos (533 meters) and Sugar Loaf (395 meters).
