Paraty is a historic city located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It was founded in the year 1667 and served as an important port for the gold trade in the 18th century. During this period, the city prospered and numerous colonial-style churches and public buildings were built.
However, at the end of the 18th century, the gold trade declined and Paraty fell into decline.
In the decades that followed, the city remained isolated and retained its colonial architecture, making it a popular tourist destination today.
In 1966, Paraty was declared a National Monument, and in 2019 it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rich history, colonial architecture, and natural beauty.
