In the 16th century, the region was explored by the first Portuguese colonizers, who mainly engaged in timber extraction, fishing, and sugarcane production.
It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that Guarujá developed as a tourist center, when some summer houses for the São Paulo elite were built on the island.
Over time it became a popular destination for tourists from all over Brazil and abroad, thanks to its beautiful beaches and pleasant climate.
During World War II, the island was strategic for the defense of the port of Santos. Various military installations were built in the region, including anti-aircraft batteries and coastal forts.
In the 1960s, Guarujá experienced rapid economic growth thanks to tourism, construction, and the fishing industry.
