The city of Campinas had its origin in a dairy farm established on the open road to the mines of Goiás and Mato Grosso, in the site called Campinas de Mato Grosso, in the 1720s.
However, the town has a foundation date in the year 1774, which was when it was established by Captain General Dom Antônio Luiz de Souza Botelho Mourão, governor of São Paulo.
A year later, already in the year 1775, Campinas is elevated to the category of district with the name of Conceição de Campinas.
In 1979 the municipality was established under the name of Vila de São Carlos de Campinas.
And finally in the year 1847 the town was elevated to a city with the name of Campinas.
Campinas had a rapid development during the golden age of coffee in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
