Palmas is a relatively new city in Brazil, founded in 1989, and is the capital of the state of Tocantins.
Originally, the region was a transit area for gold and diamond explorers and traders in the 19th century.
In 1988, the city was chosen to be the new capital of the state of Tocantins due to its central location in the state and its modern and functional urban planning.
Since then, Palmas has developed rapidly into a vibrant city with a growing economy, tourist attractions such as Graciosa Beach, Serra do Lajeado and Cesamar Park, and a major federal university.
