The beginnings of Chapada dos Guimarães are contemporary to those of the city of Cuiabá.
In 1726, a large part of these lands were donated to Lieutenant Colonel Antônio de Almeida Lara, who established a sugar cane mill, known as Chapada de Cuiabá.
In the year 1751, the Jesuits arrived and founded the mission of Santana da Chapada.
Only in the year 1764, the name was changed to Santana de Chapada dos Guimarães, in homage to the Duke dos Guimarães.
Finally, in 1994, the Legislative Assembly of Mato Grosso changed its name to the current Chapada dos Guimarães.
